How do I transition my pet to a raw diet?

Transitioning to a raw pet food diet should be done gradually over several weeks to avoid digestive upset. What are the benefits of feeding my pet a raw diet?

Feeding your pet a raw diet offers several potential benefits, including improved digestion, healthier skin and coat, increased energy levels, and better dental health. Raw diets typically contain high-quality protein and natural nutrients that can support overall health and well-being. Additionally, some pet owners report that raw diets can help alleviate allergies and sensitivities in their pets.

How should I store raw pet food?

Raw pet food should be stored in the freezer to maintain freshness and prevent bacterial growth. Keep the food sealed in airtight containers or packaging to avoid freezer burn and cross-contamination with other foods. Thaw only the amount needed for each meal to minimise waste and maintain optimal freshness.

How should I defrost raw pet food?

When defrosting raw pet food, it's important to do so safely to avoid bacterial contamination. Thaw the food in the refrigerator overnight or for several hours until fully thawed. Avoid defrosting raw pet food at room temperature or in warm water, as this can promote bacterial growth. Once thawed, serve the food promptly and discard any leftovers that have been sitting at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

In this video, owner Emma briefly summarises how you can ensure that your pet’s food remains as safe as possible before dinner time rolls around.

Can I feed my pet bones?

Yes, you can feed your pet bones, but it's essential to do so safely and appropriately. Raw, meaty bones are generally safe for most pets and can provide dental benefits and mental stimulation. However, it's crucial to avoid feeding cooked bones, as they can splinter and pose a choking hazard. Always supervise your pet when feeding bones and choose bones that are appropriate for your pet's size and chewing habits.
